And as with any performance, mental and physical energy is a constant requirement.
When you feel over-extended and over-whelmed at work, you no longer see yourself at all. The role becomes the ‘role only’ and you can find yourself feeling completely isolated from the role you are in. And when this way of working and living continues over long periods the only available outcome can be burn-out or break-down.
As with an engine that needs fuel to keep going, you need to know how to top up on the ‘fuel’ you need in order to keep going. To be well at work. To perform well at work.
This requires a degree of self awareness coupled with a commitment to self care.
